Japan’s 2023 Tokyo Auto Show Presents New Nissan Elgrand
Today at the Tokyo Auto Show, Nissan Motor unveiled the latest full-size van, the fourth-generation Elgrand. Recognizing the success of the outgoing E52 model, which has remained on the market for over 11 years, Nissan chose a design approach rooted in familiarity, albeit with distinct enhancements. The new model showcases a more robust design with the side panels and front end taking center stage, complemented by sophisticated LED headlights that signify the excitement of embarking on a unique journey.
The new Elgrand measures 4995 mm in length, 1895 mm in width, and 1975 mm in height, marking increases of 30 mm, 45 mm, and 160 mm, respectively, when compared to its predecessor. The car now has a larger footprint, even surpassing its main competitor, the Toyota Alphard.
Under the hood, the new Elgrand features a third-generation e-Power hybrid powertrain. This consists of a ZR15DDTe gasoline engine paired with a compact and quiet "5-in-1" electric motor that acts as a drive motor, generator, inverter, gearbox, and reducer. The new model exclusively employs a full-wheel drive system, utilizing e-4orce technology to optimize torque distribution.
In everyday driving, torque is allocated evenly across axles, while the rear wheels receive more torque during turns, enhancing maneuverability. Additionally, the active suspension system adapts damping for each wheel according to road conditions, significantly improving ride comfort.
Standard features of the fourth-generation Elgrand include the ProPilot semi-autonomous driving system, which allows the vehicle to manage itself in traffic and at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
The driver's seat has been elevated compared to the previous generation, offering improved visibility. Inside, natural leather and wood accents are extensively applied, creating a luxurious feel. A digital instrument cluster and media display occupy a single 14.3-inch space. The top trim levels will boast a premium Bose sound system with 22 speakers and ambient lighting that offers 64 color options. Details regarding the engine’s power output have yet to be disclosed. Sales of the fourth-generation Elgrand in Japan are slated to commence around 2026.
